THE VOID : An Incredible VR Experience at Disney Springs

Last night I had the opportunity to check out THE VOID: Secrets of the Empire at Disney Springs.

Now, I’ve been using VR for over a year now at home, and I’ve always been blown away by the experiences I’ve had, but nothing really prepared me for how VR could be taken to the next level. It is, without a doubt, one of the best VR experiences I have had.

When you get there, you are sorted into teams, and you are briefed on your mission. You can customize the look of your character and then you are escorted into the ready room where they suit you up with a VR helmet and vest. Everything is wireless and you basically are wearing a computer on your back. It doesn’t feel as heavy as I thought and the helmet adjusts enough so that it’s comfortable. It is no heavier than a bicycle helmet when on, and really, once you get into the game, you hardly notice it.

I won’t really go into what the actual experience plot is, but everything is fully immersive. Everything you see is to scale in the real world. The walls are actually where the walls are in the game. The boxes are where there are boxes. There are buttons and levers and you can even feel the details on an R2 unit.

One thing you will notice when you get into the game is that you’re not using controllers for your hands. There is something going on where it is tracking your hand movements. I could see my fingers move – it was INSANE. I’m assuming they are using some sort of tracking, but it’s not like anything I have seen before.

The world is VERY interactive. You are wearing a haptic feedback vest, so you get shot – you feel it. They are blasting air at you as you move, there are smells around you, you can feel the heat of fire. It’s just bananas how immersive it is.

The total experience is about 20 minutes – it goes by so fast, but if it was any longer, you might start feeling a little motion sick if you’re not used to it.

All in all, it was a great experience and I’m looking forward to going back there again to do it all over again.
